Face

When I was a kid,

You were my sunflower

(Van Gogh's sunflower),

Giving me sunshine,

Giving me hope,

Giving me directions as well.

When I was in my thirties,

You were an elegant and lofty chrysanthemum in my eyes

(I should have loved osmanthus more

Which takes the sound and sense of my surname).

I appreciate the compliments the poetic circle honor you:

"You are desireless like chrysanthemum (or daisy). "

I am always delighted to call you "my poet dad".

Your face, I should say,

Is the most lovely one in the world,

With the sword-like eyebrows of Lu Xun's *,

With the insightful eyes of Lu Xun's,

Even with Lu Xun's hair style straight like a brush on end.

Your face

Is an incarnation of Confucian temperament,

A mirror of chivalrous spirit,

And a pool of softness and tenderness.

Even your wrinkles

Are like the texture of a beautiful flower.

This is the cleanest face ever seen in the world,

Never made up,

Never prettified.

But one day, your face was painted,

Light,

Soft,

Graceful.

This was the first makeup in your life,

Also your last wisp of color left in this world.

I printed my most affectionate and ever-lasting kiss

On your beloved face.

And your face has naturally become

The rear view mirror for the rest of my life.

* Lu Xun, pen name of Zhou Shuren (born September 25, 1881, Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, China—died October 19, 1936, Shanghai), Chinese writer, commonly considered the greatest in 20th-century Chinese literature, who was also an important critic known for his sharp and unique essays on the historical traditions and modern conditions of China.
